Opening hearing of the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion
The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion will hold its first public hearing at 10:30 am on Tuesday 24 February 2026 (AEDT).
At the opening hearing, Commissioner Virginia Bell AC SC will make a short opening statement explaining how she will approach the terms of reference for the inquiry.
“I acknowledge the importance of addressing antisemitism within the Australian community. I plan to conduct the inquiry as expeditiously as possible so that I can deliver a report containing my findings and recommendations not later than the first anniversary of the antisemitic terrorist attack that took place at Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025”, said Commissioner Bell.
Senior Counsel Assisting Richard Lancaster SC will also make a short opening statement. There will not be any testimony heard or evidence given.
The Royal Commission was established on 9 January 2026. It will produce an interim report by 30 April 2026 and a final report by 14 December 2026. There will be opportunities for people to share their experiences over the life of the inquiry, through submissions and public hearings.
The hearing will be livestreamed through the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion’s website and a recording and transcript will be available on the website shortly after the hearing.
